Well, unless your rotting corpse has already had one fall out, but all manner of monsters go crazy for our Nutz 4 Brainz pie and you don’t wanna miss out on this demonically delicious treat! So come on down to the All-Night Bakery, open from sunset to sunrise, and grab one before they shamble away into the horrifying darkness...BOO-YA! Celebrate this hallowed day the zombie way! A totally nutty yummy blend of chestnuts, pralines and almonds sweetened with brown sugar and molasses, combined with oozing blackberry and blueberry then cradled in fresh-baked pie crust and topped with luscious vanilla buttercream. Though there might be someone out there willing to nibble the deliciousness of You, we’ve added some dark sweet amber to remind all those biters it’s just perfume! “Candy?! Yuck!” Rhea and her friends peered into their sacks with disgust. At that moment another group of children passed them, shrieking with what seemed like genuine fear. “Did we end up on the warm side of town?” Tobe asked. “Aww I bet we did, I hate it when that happens!” George declared. Lizzie fished a beetle out of her hair and watched it wriggle. “There’s gotta be someone around here who knows what we like to get on Z-Day!” Rhea scrunched up her rotting face. “Humans don’t even know about Z-Day, they’re all celebrating that dumb Halloween stuff.” They shuddered, but also knew it was the one time of the year they could wander anywhere they liked without people freaking out on them. They watched as an entire pretend zombie family lurched by, moaning “BRAAAAAINS.” “Why do they think we do that?” The boys shrugged and the undead children made their way up the street. “I sure could go for some brains right now,” Tobe said. They passed by a house where an old lady sat on the porch, dressed as a witch. “Hey kiddies,” she called out to them. “Do you adorable little zombies want some of my Nutz 4 Brainz pie from the All-Night Bakery?” “BRAINS?!” they exclaimed, and dragged themselves over to her as fast as they could. “Yes my dears,” she said as she served them each a slice. “It’s got pralines in it you see, like little brains.” They sniffed suspiciously at first, but upon spotting the familiar shapes wolfed it down hungrily. “Crunchy brains,” George said. “Kinda weird.” “And sticky too,” Rhea noted. On their way back to the cold side of town they passed by yet another group masquerading as one of their own, all looking into their trick-or-treat bags with perplexed expressions. “I think I got a liver,” one of them said. “LIver?! Yuck!” “Hurry!” Rhea exclaimed, “We’ve got to get back before they run out!” Her friends grunted and shambled a little faster.

FERMENTED ALCOHOLS: WINE, BEER, HARD LIQUOR, ETC ~ Intoxicant, used as an offering or appeasement for Gods, used in love spells, and celebratory spells. from Cherry On Top a Savannah Finch adventure by Julian Lune (part four) I’d brought Sebastian with me when I visited my next locale because I figured he could use an eye-opener. The wooden sign above the place read Juicy Lucy’s Fresh-Squeezed featuring genuine Louisiana Navel oranges!!! and I marveled, not for the first time, at how it was all so nicely painted upon the plank. Lucy had been ahead of the juicing fad by about twenty years, although her specific speciality was citrus. You could smell that bright sunshiney tang all down the block, and on a blazing afternoon the air felt sticky not just with humidity but also the oils of her wares. The roar of the juice extractors was competing with a boombox blasting Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Lucy was behind the counter doing a slinky two-step to the groove. “Savannah, where y’at!” Lucy was always such a cheerful sight: she dressed in layers of orange and gold and had the most enchanting freckles I’d ever seen on a person. I think she used some kind of gold-infused face powder because she always seemed to shimmer. But Sebastian turned pale as soon as he saw her. “Fairy gifts!” he gasped. I froze. That could mean any number of things, but whatever it was, for Bast to just blurt it out like that meant that it was something entirely obvious to his veil-piercing scrutiny. I muttered my ongoing dissatisfaction that Pims didn’t let me keep those goggles. Then again, being able to actually peek underneath the rind of human reality is incredibly distracting most of the time. Lucy looked around, an elderly couple by the shop’s front window drank from plastic to-go cups but otherwise the place was empty of customers. “Now you listen here, goat-boy -” she chided, but I interrupted. “Lucy, you know you have to advertise if your goods are enchanted!” “I said gifts, not goods!” Bast interjected. “She’s got a glamour you can see from space!” “Miss Lucy this juice sure is tasty,” one of the pair remarked, coming to the counter with his cup. “You want me to freshen that up for ya, hun? On the house!” “Why thank you kindly.” And sure, oranges are good for you in all kind of ways but even I knew why Lucy was a Crescent City institution - the addition of Vitamin V to a generous cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice was mighty tasty indeed. “I would say she doesn’t even need a glamour, you know?” Sebastian smirked. “True, the juice sells itself.” “Now Miss Lucy,” I continued after the man had received his refill, “you can’t tell me you need the Fae’s help to make you beautiful!” “Savannah, I am gettin’ on in years and a girl likes to glow, you know?” She struck a pose with a bejeweled hand on her hip and chin raised. She really was stunning to behold. “But what did you pay?” “That’s between me and the sprite what gave me the dust, now. I caint speak of it.” “Any other gifts you know of being traded about...like chocolates?” Sebastian asked. “Chocolates? You know that’s Mabel’s racket, I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout it.” I handed her a tenner. “Set us up with two to go - but just a splash of rum, alright? I still got things to do.” Lucy giggled and her freckles sparkled. “It’s just what the doctor ordered!” “Yeah you right!” After Bast took a sip he smiled. “The glamour convinces everyone that it’s okay to have some orange juice with your booze.” Lucy winked at him. “Now you best keep my secret, cher -” “Miss Lucy, you remember what they say at the Hi-Hat -” At this she filled a cup of her own and held it up in a toast. “If you ain’t drinkin’ you ain’t thinkin!’” Bast downed the contents of his cup. “I’ll drink to that, again!”

HEDIONE ~ (JASMINE) ~ Self confidence, anxiety reduction, prosperity; powerful love attractant, spiritual love. Fall takes dominion slowly across the landscape and we desired to capture the aura of the last of the Summer flowers releasing their scents into the damp air of Autumn, as the inevitable decay transforms the garden they inhabit...the ghosts of rose, honeysuckle and clover whisper their farewells amongst rainy accords and woody notes of cedar, cypress, teak and pine with hints of oak leaf and walnut. We’ve also included the attractive charm of Hedione - a Jasmine derivative which has been discovered to evoke a pheromone-like response, especially in women when worn by men. It gives off a lovely fresh airy floral note which is often added to fragrances for both sexes. I held the memory of petals of velvet and of redolent bloom I felt the glittering sun even as the rain washed it away. I love the colors of the change I touched a dying flower upon these fiery leaves incongruent and yet it explains how nothing of light and warmth can remain. When the air is murmuring rumors of absence promises of chill and of decline I felt it all shift in an instant in the time it took the last petal to fall.

A haunting unisex blend of spicy pumpkin accords buried within freshly-turned earth, mingling with resinous accents of patchouli, dragon’s blood, oakmoss and frankincense & myrrh plus enigmatic touches of walnut and gunpowder. FYI - The first Jack O' Lanterns were made from root vegetables, called Mangelwurzels. “Harley! Dude, I don’t wanna have to look for this place in the dark, c’mon!” Tad was playing some deathcore band or something, melodic music but the guy was screaming like he was actually trying to kill his vocal chords. “What the hell is this?” “It’s bitchin’ is what it is.” My roommate, who imagined herself an amateur anthropologist, came bounding down the stairs, excitedly waving pieces of paper. “Finally! It took me forever to try and find that message board again.” “So what’s the deal?” “C’mon, c’mon, let’s go!” she shouted and we all got into the car. Tad pulled away like we had just robbed a bank, the goofball. “Okay so there’s this town about twenty miles on the way to Centerton where they do the Terrible Turnip thing for Samhein.” Tad and I rolled our eyes at each other. “Some freaky pagan shit? Hells ya!” he said, throwing horns. Harley smacked him. “Can you please turn this crap down? I can’t even hear myself think!” “So you said they used to use turnips instead of pumpkins?” “Yeah, it’s a totally ancient tradition, to ward off evil spirits they would carve a face into a turnip and place a coal from their fire inside.” “So this town, or whatever, they still use turnips?” “Not just any kind of turnip - the Terrible Turnip, said to be totally terrifying all on its’ own.” “How the eff can a turnip be terrifying?” Tad wanted to know. “That's what we’re gonna find out. Okay, so follow the highway till you see exit nine - that goes to Mangelwurzel.” “That’s a mouthful!” I joked. “So I read an entry about the festival in that book I told you I found, the Fiendish Field Guide. It said there’s a pagan sacrificial ritual enacted to appease the dead who have pierced the veil and intend to remain in our world.” “What, do ghosts want turnips?” “There it is!” Marley cried and Tad made a quick right like he thought he was a stunt driver. “You better stop driving so crazy, dude, if we even wanna make it to this turnip town!” I exclaimed. “Okay so now it’s gonna be about 20 miles to the town and the Guide said we should see the sign from the road.” As we drove I noticed that the surroundings looked rather deserted, I had never taken this route to Centerton myself. Most everyone I knew took the main highway. I was getting a creepy feeling, no doubt inspired by any number of found-footage movies and the like. “So what kinda place is it, that they have pagan rituals and stuff?” “It’s a farming town, it was founded around the time that outliers first came to this region.” “And it looks like it hasn’t changed at all,” I said, peering up at the trees just beyond the road. They were so thick I could barely see between them. “The Guide said it was ‘rustic.’” “So it’s a party, right?” Tad said, turning up the music again. “Like we can get some grub?” “I brought snacks!” I rummaged through a cloth bag. “Who wants an apple?” “Ooh, are they from that pick-your-own orchard?” Harley asked. “You know it, girl!” I tossed her one. I motioned to Tad but he shook his head. We crunched and munched and Tad bobbed his head along to the music. The sign seemed to appear out of nowhere: MANGELWURZEL, with a painted border of vegetables around the name. An arrow affixed below the sign pointed to another turnoff and we bumped along a tar-and-chip road which was really more like a path until we came into a clearing and there was the town. My mouth hung open, and I think Tad and Harley were equally stunned. The place looked frozen in time, somehow. The architecture looked to be from the early 1900s but there were elements which appeared older than that. But more than that, it looked like it was somehow entirely out of our world. Tad slowed down as the car approached the town square. An enormous scarecrow was erected there, with incredibly long arms and legs, topped with a jack o’lantern. “Wait, I thought you said they were into turnips here,” I said to Harley. “They are, but this is The Protector, they burn him in effigy every year to appease the restless spirits. A symbolic sacrifice.” “Duuuude, wait a minute, does that mean they used to sacrifice an actual dude?” Harley smacked Tad on the arm again. “Don’t be disrespectful of their traditions!” “Yeah but, human sacrifice is not what it used to be,” I said. We exited the car - Tad having mercifully killed the stereo mid-bellow - and looked around. It certainly didn’t look like a festival, or any other celebration I’ve seen. There was absolutely no one around. Placed in front of the so-named Protector was an enormous pile of vegetables. “But what are they gonna eat in the wintertime?” Tad asked, picking up an onion. “If they throw all this stuff on the bonfire or whatever?” “The Protector provides,” a voice called out and we looked up the street. There was a crowd gathering about a block away, and they held in their collective hands the implements of the harvest: pitchforks and scythes and rakes. “The Protector has always provided for us.” “Tad?” Harley began, her voice trembling. “Remember how we always tell you not to drive like a crazy man?” “Uh, yeah?” “Well can you do it now please because we need to get the hell out of here!” We scrambled to get back in the car, screaming at him to move move move and he managed to reverse it and pull away as they advanced on us, running. We were far down the bumpy road before I felt safe enough to look behind us. No one was following, but Tad continued to drive like he was in a rally car race till we hit the main road. “Go to a pagan festival, she says. It will be fun and educational, she says,” Tad chided. I handed him some beef jerky and a soda and that seemed to calm him down. “Well I thought it would be!” “I think it would be a good idea not to take any advice from a book with ‘fiendish’ in the title ever again.” “Geez, you have one little run-in with an insular cult-like community and your credibility is ruined!” We laughed, but…I still dream about those people. They looked so determined. And that’s why their harvest was so bountiful. I bet it is every year.

Banquets, festivals and parades are also held on this day, reminding us all that life is short and sweet, so don’t miss a moment of its pleasures, especially those we find in the ones we love. Our olfactory interpretation of this pious observance features traditional ingredients which when combined create a unique scent only experienced one day of the year, symbolizing its mysteries and its blessings…spicy geranium and crisp sage mingle with the resinous depths of dragon’s blood, myrrh and Mexican copal as well as the spiritually high vibration of lavender - allowing one to better commune with the otherworldly energies residing beyond our plane of existence.

AMBER ~ Fertility, creativity, love, luck, riches. This Halloween we’ve fired up our cauldron to present you with a monstrously delicious concoction...black and blue raspberry and two types of caramel-y apples drowning in deep dark fudgy chocolate and swirled with sticky clouds of blue cotton candy...sinking into a dark amber swamp. Beware those tricky sugary sweet treats and the gnarly old trees who might be trying to tempt you! FYI - Gravenstein is a type of Apple! You see the sign at the side of the road: HOLIDAY APPLE HARVEST, TURN HERE decorated with apples engraved with faces, some spooky, some smiling. You think it would be nice to go pick some apples on such a beautifully golden Autumn day. The orchard seems rather small compared to others you have seen but the crisp scent is enticing as you exit your car and walk to the entrance, framed by a wooden gate carved with various symbols, some familiar and some unknown. A kindly old man greets you, accepts the entrance fee, and hands you a basket. “All we ask is that you keep to the main area here,” he indicates, pointing at rows of trees. “Don’t go up the hill, please. But it’s all you can pick!” Moving through the rows there seem to be so many types of apples: dark red, bright green, sunny yellow and various shades in between. Plus some which seem to resemble pumpkins, a sort of orange-gold. Your basket is getting heavy and you stop at the end of one of the rows, looking up at the hill and the large and gnarled tree at the top of it. A woman comes to stand beside you and gives you a friendly smile. “Having fun?” she asks. You nod and then her gaze follows yours to that solitary tree. “This orchard is so old no one alive knows how long ago it was planted. But that tree does have a legend about it. It produces exactly one apple a year.” “Only one? How can that be?” you ask. “It was an experiment,” she replies, then makes some kind of gesture with her hand in the direction of the tree. It seems to respond, its’ branches waving. But that was impossible, right? “There’s a botanist in these parts, he wanted to create an apple no one could resist, the perfect flavor between sweet and tart, flesh that was crunchy but also creamy, and a skin so beautiful you couldn’t resist the temptation to take a big bite.” “So who is this botanist, have I heard of him?” “Dr. von Gravenstein? Perhaps. More infamous than famous, if you know what I mean. Most folks around here consider him to be quite mad.” “Did he do it? Create the perfect apple?” “Oh yes, he grafted numerous varieties to produce the tree you see there. But there were...drawbacks.” The tree does seem creepy, certainly, its’ limbs twisted into torturous positions - looking as though it had risen from some infernal depths rather than sprouted from a normal grafting. “Such as?” “You wouldn’t believe me. No one is allowed to go up that hill. But if they do, well…” “So what happens to the apple, if no one picks it? Does it just die?” “Oh it never dies. But it does get picked, eventually.” “But -” You’re not sure what to say to such a weird statement. The wind picks up, the sun is getting low in the sky, and the shadows become frightening, somehow. You shiver, and wish you had remembered your sweater. “- there’s no fence around it, or a warning sign, or anything!” “It won’t allow us to stop people from getting close if they really want to.” You stand there, mouth open, trying to understand. “Care for some of our local favorite?” the old man asks, suddenly beside you, holding out a plate ringed with slices of apple. You take one and bite into it. The flesh is crisp but also somehow creamy, the taste almost candy-sweet but with just a touch of tartness, a tingling sour edge. As you eat the slice of apple the wind gusts again and in that moment you can see the lone apple on the tree, swinging on its’ branch into a shaft of sunlight. It glitters, seemingly all colors, it sparkles and you feel your mouth water beyond your immediate enjoyment of the apple itself. “This apple is wonderful,” you comment after you have tasted and chewed and swallowed. “Was it also created by Dr. von Gravenstein?” They nod, with faint smiles. “In a manner of speaking,” the old man tells you. “One year we were lucky enough to find a half-eaten apple from that tree. It had rolled down the hill. We took the seeds and planted them and they grew...better. We can pick those apples just fine. The trees are just...trees.” “What happens when no one tries to pick that apple?” you ask. “Oh someone always does,” replies the woman. “But I’d hate to think of what would happen if they didn’t.” They each take slices of apple and chew them thoughtfully as you all stare at the tree, its’ form made even more ominous by the light of the setting sun.
