Performing...Need help to calm my nerves

Recommended Posts

I am on an amateur salsa dance performance team with 8 other people. We have been rehearsing since August and will be performing throughout February and into March. We recently got accepted to perform at the Chicago Salsa Congress in a couple of weeks which is exciting and very nerve-racking. I also have the added pressure of being chosen team captain and dealing with all the responsibilities that it involves.

I have performed on a limited basis before. (I am the only one on the team that has, so this is everyone else's first time.) I love it but I get so nervous to the point where I start to shake. I need something that will help to calm my nerves but keep me sharp and focused ( and hopefully rub off on everyone else). I was originally thinking of using Leather which is my go-to for getting things done, but I'm worried that it will amplify my nerves. When I'm anxious, I usually grab Balm Bomb, but that makes me drowsy and I definitely don't want that.

Also, my dance partner and I have been struggling with the ending. It is a complicated trick move which we have done successfully many times before. But lately it seems to be falling apart and we are loosing the connection we need to execute the move correctly. We both know what the issues are but it seems to be more of a mental hurdle to get over.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does Leather make you nervous? I find Dominance makes me focused but I haven't tried it when anxious. Stressed, yes, anxious, no.

Mega Watt is excellent for focus also but I don't know if that would make you anxious or not. Again, I've never felt that way while wearing it but I haven't worn it at a time that I've needed it for that.

The other day I was anxious and depressed. I put on Balm Bomb before leaving the house. It took care of the anxious but I was still left with the depressed. I put on Dom later to help me power through the day and feel more in charge. So you could perhaps do that, start with one and then half way through the day change it.

It seems to me that you are asking for a lot of different things from one phero and I'm not sure how one would accomplish all that. I'm no expert though so perhaps someone else here will find a way to do what you need without mixing them up (which seems like a bad idea to me) or applying one at the beginning of the day and another toward the end.

Good Luck! :funnyanimation17:

Good luck!

Leather does not make me nervous. I get a lot accomplished when I wear it and it keeps me motivated. I just want to go go go. I like to wear it to rehearsals which is why I was initially considering this. But I have not worn it specifically for nerves so I don't know...

I like to wear Mega Watt when I am working at my computer all day. It really does help me focus and gives me calm mental energy. It puts me in the zone. So I've never thought about it for dance, but it's a great idea. I will have to try this. My sample is gone but I have a FB on the way...

Thanks for the link. I completely forgot about Audacious! Yes that one is awesome for confidence boosting. I have Soaked which i haven't worn in ages but I think it's calling my name.

Sounds like you have some good options. I hope it goes brilliantly but especially that you have fun!

Hmm...LFM works great for me! I do have Dom, which of course is akin to Leather Light. Dom makes me feel more focused, sharp, and organized. LFM makes me feel as if I can walk into any situation and have confidence radiating from every pore! Each has their significant merits. Decisions! Have a great time, do your stuff, and leave them wanting more. You've got this covered! :)

My vote goes to LFM. It has a bit of A1 for calm but not enough to make you drowsy. The epi gives confidence. If you want a bit more drive then you could go for LFN, that bit of none helps with focus and is sexier. But it can also make people a bit edgy. I would definitely do some testing prior to the actual performance.

Thanks Everyone! Those are great ideas for me to work with. I ended up wearing LFM to practice yesterday and things went well. We nailed the landing several times. I felt relaxed and confident. The team's overall energy was good. So definitely all positive...

I am going to test it again at dress rehearsal this week when I'll be a lot more amped up, to see how that works and go from there.

First performance done and we KILLED it!. It was a great night...

I wore LFM with Lusty Cherry. This is such a great combo. I stayed calm and focused even though I was running around helping others get ready pre-performance. It was chaotic but I wasn't fazed by it. We had a huge audience and a few of my family members were there. Our team was the first of 4 to perform. As we were lined up to walk out on stage, I saw my ex (one who broke my heart, who I've never really gotten over) sitting in the front row, right smack in the middle. Then I started to shake. I wasn't expecting him to be there so it threw me a bit, and he still has that effect on me. But I managed to pull it together fairly quickly and stay focused on what I needed to do, rather than him. I felt very confident out on that dance floor.

Huge win for LFM! I may play with Audacious out of curiosity for one of our later performances at a more casual event. But otherwise I plan to stick with this. Thanks everyone for your input. It was extremely helpful!

I have a question along the same lines. I have to record a customer demo tomorrow and initially it was supposed to be done by someone else. It's very technical and I'd have to be in front of the camera, which i am not comfortable with because I am not an expert on the subject, plus I am simply not confident in front of the camera.

I usually wear SWS to work and works beautifully. Audacious is obviously out if the question since this is a professional setting. I want to stay away from cops.

I'm still figuring out the dosage on Mega Watt and LFM is fine in terms of confidence, but I don't think I get the same laser focus and professional respect I get as when I wear SWS. Plus, I feel more like a queen, rather than confident in my skills when I wear LFM..

I've tried Leather and Dom begore, and I am definitely confident when I wear them, but I'm not sure about giving me the "at ease" feeling. I go into "get it done" mode, ready to take out anyone standing in my way, and I can feel my blood boiling if things do not go my way.

So, this is a situation where I need to be calm in front if the camera, focused, and confident in my technical skills... Suggestions?

I would wear SWS, because you already know it works great for you...

Although LFM worked great for me for my situation, SWS is probably better for professional settings. I, too, find that I get more respect at work when I use that...

So last night was our last performance. It was a great run and LFM did exactly what I needed it to. I still had a healthy amount of nervousness, but was confident and focused. Total win.

However, I did wear Audacious to one of the more casual events. It was an interesting experience. I had absolutely no nervousness whatsoever. I'm thinking this is really great...But as soon as we hit the stage, my dance partner completely blanked out and forgot the routine. I had to back lead him through most of it. It was pretty messy. We nailed the ending though so that counts. And fortunately the lighting was poor and no one really noticed. He has no idea what happened. I didn't realize until later that it was probably Audacious that caught him off guard. OOPS! We've had lots of laughs over it but he still doesn't know :-)
