March 2010

She thought her heart would crumble to dust, so powerful was her love for him, he who walked in the sunlight and outshone its radiance. But he could not see her, small plain shadow she was...he could not know how she burned for him, longed for his love: for the feel of his arms around her, his lips upon hers, his voice to murmur her name alone in desirous whispers.

The girl despaired of ever attracting him, until she was told of the Wise Woman of the Bayou, who had a magick for every occasion, every ailment, though one had to venture into the depths of that tangled overgrown swamp in order to seek her counsel and assistance.

She gathered her courage and her coin, climbing into her old pickup and setting out to possess the cure for her malaise.

The road wound on for miles beyond the city...the sky overtaken by the cypress and crepe myrtle trees forming a canopy overhead, moss hanging like dark shawls from branches and trunks, distant flashes of fireflies, and the dark slow river beyond. Finally around a bend the cabin of the Wise Woman could be seen, its windows ablaze against the darkness which enveloped the bayou. The girl emerged from her truck to the sound of bullfrogs, cicadas and nightbirds, the air thick with the scents of her surroundings. From the cabin the most delicious odor slithered into her nose...she followed it almost against her will, up the steps, coming to stand before the door. As she raised her fist to knock it was then opened by a beautiful dark-haired, dark-eyed woman, quite the opposite of the crone she believed she would find.

"You come out here for my help, eh? Is your heart aching for someone?"

The girl nodded and was ushered within. But before she stepped into the welcoming ambiance of the cabin she sensed they were being watched. She looked back, not knowing what to expect, and the woman put a hand upon her shoulder.

"There is nothing out there for you...yet. But in time, there may be!"

The woman chuckled as she closed the door. The night was then undisturbed once more, as fireflies chased each other through the cattails and the frogs and the whippoorwills serenaded all the other creatures of the night...
