The night was ever and always captivating for him...the liquid verdant miles surrounding him...the mystery and the magick of it all, his home, deep within the Bayou. He stood at the window sipping bourbon, and his dark eyes could see beyond the shades and shadows of the moss hanging from the trees, the slow-moving water and the sounds in the darkness of the chorus of creatures who dwelled there with him. With his dark hair and clothing he was part of the gloom, only his eyes shone ochre by the beams of moonlight coming through the trees. His great plantation had been overgrown by foliage, but he, who had mingled in sophisticated society now preferred the solitary comforts of this wild place.

He knew he was waiting for something, someone, to emerge from the night and into his realm. His patience was rewarded, eventually, by the sound of an automobile coming down the road.

"Someone is lost," he said to himself, taking another sip. "But I will find them."

"A plantation?" she wondered, "All the way out here?"

It was so easy to lose oneself in the darkness. But her question was answered as a tall man with thick black hair opened the door and stepped out onto the veranda. He viewed her truck with an amused smirk, quirking one dark eyebrow.

"Do you seek me?" he asked her, his voice soft with the trace of a seductive Creole accent. "Or have you traveled this way for something else?"

She was startled by this handsome vision, not quite sure if he was real – the Bayou was magick and therefore suspect – but she was afraid to admit she'd been to see the Wise Woman. She felt herself falling into his deep brown gaze, succumbing to his power. The air had gone silent, she noticed, how very strange...

"I –" she stammered, feeling faint, "I'm not sure I remember now."

"Well," he said, extending one graceful long-fingered hand to his visitor, "why don't we see if we can solve this mystery."

As they entered the great house, the night was alive once more with a serenade of inhabitants. Did they call out an invitation, or a warning? Only two would ever know for certain...
