Review Thread

“If the shoe fits,” her mother was fond of saying, and she found herself wondering what that really meant.  She knew the source of the phrase was a fairy tale, but outside of an actual shoe store, who was going to be waiting to find her a perfect fit?  She looked at all her shoes littering the floor of her closet: sneakers, slippers both casual and formal, sandals, saddle shoes, boots.  None of them seemed to fit the mood which clothed her now, like a new and unfamiliar outfit.  She considered her feet, which seemed so big though she knew they were in proportion to the rest of her.  Her reflection in the mirror seemed to show another person straining beneath her bones to emerge: someone who would know who she was, who would express herself in the best way, someone who desired to be only herself. And what kind of shoes would that person wear? She giggled.  What a silly question…whatever shoes she wanted, that’s what kind!

Then, looking towards the back of the space, she spied a pair of shoes she’d never noticed before.  A pair of clear jelly slip-ons with bright flowers painted on top.  They were fanciful; silly but pretty. She wigged her toes in their equally fanciful striped socks.

“Well,” she said to herself, “let’s start with these shoes and find out where they take me.”
