Definition: Basking in the aroma of freshly baked goods, often evidenced by nosemarks on windows.... We've all been there, walking down the sidewalk on a cold winter morning, huddled in our coats and scarves. Then it hits us…that one-of-a-kind smell that only a bakery can create. A creamy caramel custard in a freshly-baked pie shell, with the barest hint of a sprinkle of coffee powder across the top. The smell of vanilla and buttercream lures us further down the sidewalk, where we peer through the bakery window and take in the heady fragrances of egg custard, sweet potato, a delicate whisper of almond and the faintest hint of nutmeg and cardamom. A true gourmet will appreciate this heady blend of sweetness and spice. If you ask nicely, maybe the baker will open the door and let you take a teasing lick off the top.
