It was a very curious shop upon a side street which wasn’t always there.  That is to say, you couldn’t always find it if you were meaning to.  But just when you weren’t then there it would be, waiting for you to enter and browse its wares.  And it was curious in that it always seemed to have whatever you needed.  Not what you thought you needed, however, but exactly what you did need.  Or what you would need, later.  When you’d departed in a sort of daze wherein you couldn’t remember if you’d had a bit of lunch, or the name of your third cousin twice removed on your mother’s side, or if you’d fed the cat, you stood there on the corner where the main street intersected with the side street which wasn’t always there and you turned around to find it was an altogether different street somehow, but with a shadow just beyond the border, lingering, like a hole in the world. Or a portal.  And it spoke to you, it said: “I’m still here, and you’re welcome to visit anytime, just walk within my tenebrous absence and you’ll come out the other side.”  And then you shivered, wondering where it did lead after all. and then it all came back to you, all the things you normally remembered, and you hurried on homeward.  And when you were home, safe and sound, warm and snug, you found a book in your bag.  And it’s just what you needed, this book, because you’d been forgetting to stop by the library, and the book was bound in black and titled don’t be afraid of…THE DARK and you thought it was rather macabre but intriguing, and you turned to the first page and read It was a very curious shop upon a side street which wasn’t always there and then you stopped because it seemed so familiar and wondered where you’d read it before…
