A unisex beauty of a nature scent that conjures a rainy day in the woods, misty and damp, darkening in the hollows with the distant rumble of thunder and quick flashes of lightning overhead. Dry leaves and wet woods form the heart of our forest, with dewy notes of fern and fresh cut stems, and autumnal accents of apple and hay blended with the ambiance of earth and smoky frankincense.

OAK ~ A wood of masculine and projective energy. It symbolizes endurance, triumph, strength, power, prosperity, and heroism.

APPLE ~ Love, healing, fertility, good luck , happiness, immortality, fortelling spells.
HAY ~ Friendliness, fruitfulness.
FERN ~ Stamina, virility/fertility, sincerity, fascination, eternal youth, bestows confidence, riches, creates perimeter of protection, luck. Representative of ancient knowledge.
FRANKINCENSE ~ Purification, consecration, protection, exorcism. Associated with silver and the moon.

I enjoy hiking in the fall...the crunch of leaves beneath my boots, the spicy scent of the woods’ decaying plant life, the crisp note in the air: wet and flinty and cold.  But in this particular part of our local forest we’ve been warned not to hike too late in the day.  There are places where the trees grow close enough to block out the sky and hollows where the fog collects...one can lose their way very quickly even along the established trails.  All the trees begin to look the same, each outcropping of rock, each clearing of long grass and bushes.

But what I would caution against isn’t so plain a problem as losing one’s way.  It’s the whispering.

We don’t question what it is, or where it comes from.  But it will be heard, as the sky cycles through all the brilliant colors of sunset and the shadows lengthen.  It’s easy to become distracted by the intensity of the orange light, the way everything seems to shimmer, as if molten gold has been poured upon the landscape.  To marvel at how beautiful it all is: the tall trees, the snaking silver of the river, the boulders which seem to embody so many colors and shapes.  The mushrooms growing in perfect rings, and the grass fluttering in the breeze.

You might find that you come upon a place where Autumn has been suspended and the sun is high and the air is sweet and butterflies and dragonflies and hummingbirds can be seen making their aerial perambulations.

Or a place where a gentle rain is ever-falling, upon a field which stretches on forever, or at least farther than you can see.  Distance is unreliable in these places, should you lose yourself and find them.

Because then you will discern, at the edge of your hearing or perhaps just under it...

Come.

It’s not the people who get lost which troubles us, when it grows dark and cold and we shut out the October night.

It’s the ones who never return.
