These candy-colored apes live in secluded communities which require two sources of sustenance: fresh water and almandel; which we know as the humble almond. The primates dwell within almond trees and have developed a complex society based entirely around the production of marzipan: the young harvest the almonds and shell them, and the adults, using sophisticated tools, crush the nuts into paste which they sweeten and then fashion into all manner of objects, often portraying other types of sustenance required by their diets, such as fruit and insects. But perhaps the most intriguing ritual is that of Orangzipan courtship: males spend weeks manufacturing and sculpting marzipan into intricate and ambitious designs, and prospective females will visit the male nests to decide who would make the best mate based on the intelligence and creativity of the design on display. Fathers teach their sons the basic skills of marzipan sculpture, with the hope that their progeny will develop the necessary artistic talent to attract the dominant female of their social group. The male deemed the best sculptor is awarded with a position as regent to the female head of the group, and his primary toil becomes that of producing ever more elaborate sculptures for his mate’s aesthetic pleasure and consumption.
