They never tell the true story of fairy floss, those historians in the human world, they never tell how it was discovered centuries ago by a young man drawn to a forest grove, chasing after lovely spirits of the air who left delicious glittering trails in their wake which teased and tempted him onward, knowing they meant to bring him under the hill for their pleasure. Even though so obvious a trap, still he ran after them. The Fae had spied upon the castle which abuted their realm, waiting for just the right one so fair of flesh to claim as their own...but somehow they lost him, he took a path they did not travel, even as he could taste the sugar upon the air, gossamer threads still clinging to his clothes and hair. In the morning he emerged on the far side of the woods and returned to his place of origin, whereupon he visited the kitchen and convinced the cook to try and recreate the delicacy which suffused his imagination with its nectarous yet ephemerial flavor. And though it was a wondrous discovery, it never quite matched the magic of his encounter with the Shining Ones. And now the fairies curse and stamp their feet to see all of humankind enjoying their favorite toothsome lure, spun high into clouds of brightly-colored sweetness, melting in their mouths like the kiss of a fae lover once the sun has set and the night is alive with fireflies and the distant music of their revels...
