But Carter is most well-known for his excavation in 1922 of the nearly-intact tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings. In that fateful moment when upon the precipice of a life-changing discovery, he was asked by his patron Lord Carnavon if he could see anything beyond the as-yet unopened doorway of the tomb and Carter replied, "Yes, wonderful things."
