From Moderor de Caliginis (aka The Black Guide), tenth edition, c. late 1990s Hemwicke, MA (population: 207) Located west of Arkham and south of Aylesbury, this hamlet upon the banks of the Miskatonic is primarily known for its’ Autumnal observations, such as the Festival of the Black Herd, in honor of the unusual deer population of the area, which local legend claims is bountiful when the town enacts the proper rituals to ensure their survival. Bonfires are erected each night and singing and dancing in the local custom can be observed. Also popular is the Gourd Festival, celebrating the blood-red pumpkins grown and harvested by family farms in the local environs, offering all manner of pumpkin-related delights, such as the famous Crepuscular Cookies only available during the week of All Hallows. Hayrides and guided walks are also offered, though visitors should be aware that one is required to sign a waiver stating the town is not responsible for those who may become lost during such an activity. The woods surrounding Hemwicke are, to quote one local who wishes to remain anonymous, “hungry.” (with apologies to HPL & Laird Barron) PUMPKIN ~ Fertility, plenty, abundance, prosperity. Male sexual stimulant. OAK ~ A wood of masculine and projective energy. It symbolizes endurance, triumph, strength, power, prosperity, and heroism. SANDALWOOD ~ Love, exotic, sensual atmospheric; aphrodisiac. Healing, spirituality, exorcism. SMOKE ~ In addition to the attributes of whatever is being burned (resins, woods, etc), smoke is for cleansing, purification, renewal, consecration, concealment and celebration. It is also the foremost mode of communication from this world to the realm of spirits and the gods. GINGER ~ Fiery and fortifying, induces passion. Intensifies love spells and success spells. Love, money, success, power. Ginger increases sensitivity in the erogenous zones. ALLSPICE ~ Luck, health, prosperity, money. FRANKINCENSE ~ Purification, consecration, protection, exorcism. Associated with silver and the moon.
