An eye-opening eldritch concoction of roasted coffee beans with the incensual wonders of nag champa and Tunisian opium as well as deep resinous vibrations of Indian sandalwood, amber, frankincense and dragon’s blood, adorned with exotically fragrant champaca flower and just a touch of aromatic fennel. From Moderor de Caliginis (aka The Black Guide), seventeenth edition, c. mid-2010s Attractions of Hemwicke, MA Mourning Glory Main St and 11th. As big city purveyors of caffeinated beverages have not extended their influence into this particular region of Massachusetts, locals and visitors alike must content themselves with this establishment, located in the main retail district of Hemwicke. Housed in a building which dates back to the late 1600s (though the evidence of colonization in this area of the state is said to stretch back even farther, according to local legend) it is quite an atmospheric and odd place to queue for one’s morning brew, but the coffee itself is quite delicious if you ask most patrons, though one recent visitor was heard to inquire “Is this a coffeehouse or a Gothic opium den?” The answer, in truth, may be “Both.” as the wait staff is black-clad and a bit surly, though also strangely attractive. Also available for purchase are t-shirts bearing the establishment’s motto: Mourning Glory: because you’ll sleep when you’re dead. (with apologies to HPL & Laird Barron) COFFEE ~ Focus, stamina, concentration, determination. SANDALWOOD ~ Love, exotic, sensual atmospheric; aphrodisiac. Healing, spirituality, exorcism. DRAGON’S BLOOD ~ Entices errant lovers to return, increases power of other ingredients. Love, protection, exorcism, potency. POPPY (OPIUM) ~ Fertility, prosperity, love. Deepens feelings, instills calmness. Imagination, pleasure, wealth, success. FRANKINCENSE ~ Purification, consecration, protection, exorcism. Associated with silver and the moon. FRANGIPANI ~ Trust, confidence. CHAMPACA FLOWER ~ Grief relief, ritual offering, spiritual awareness. FENNEL ~ Healing, protection, purification, ecstasy, sexual potency.
