Yes I hate getting packages when my BFs mom is staying with us for a few days. Totally nosy and acts so displeased about my spending! Shit- I'm grown! My own mom doesn't even care!

I would freak the fuck out if someone dared to have any opinion about my purchases other than supportive interest. My kids love it when my LPs get here and love to sniff each one. BF doesn't bat an eye and I like it that way.

Octave, I don't know you, so I'll assume you didn't realize it, but "me so horny" is RACIST AS FUCK. It's saying 30% of the world's population is uneducated Vietnam War prostitutes. Suggesting a scent with that name is like speculating about a scent called "suck yo dick for a dolla?" Whether you "meant" it "that way" or have Asian friends or are yourself Asian is irrelevant; I'm letting you know how the exact words come across.

I completely agree. Octave, I know coming up with clever names is all for fun, but you need to be careful. The stereotype Tyvey is referring to is an underlying notion that started in the--correct me if I'm wrong--30s? I believe and still somehow hasn't been extinguished in the US today, especially among white men. There is a fine line between plain ol' sexual innuendo humor and something that could really end up being offensive.

edit for typo, Invi is generally dysfunctional before noon

And this is RUDE AS HELL. If she's never heard what you're talking about, there's no way for her to know it would be taken as racist by anyone. You can educate people much more kindly than talking to them like this.

I didn't read it as coming off as rude, ill be the first to say I'm completely offensive 99.9% of the time to humans and animals,

Where I come from ( my head ) swearing is like breathing and can be used as an exclamation point, kind of like showing passion.

She was just trying to educate her in a passionate way. I understand it because I am Mexican and all Mexicans are passionate because we eat spicy foods. Tyvey was speaking Mexican.

I predict the new releases today!!

Wow I didn't think mesohorny was racist!! She wasn't implying it to any persons..just perfume notes..lol

Let me state this from the perspective of someone who is not privileged by their own cultural standpoint, just so everyone can understand why intent is irrelevant:

Today, someone said a slur. It actually doesn’t matter what slur it was, because you see, he didn’t intend to hurt anyone and therefore it couldn’t possibly be a slur. Much like how intent magically protects the actions of all privileged viewpoints, intent means that anything you say, no matter how many groups it hurts, what awful views it enables, no matter what systemic bigotries it props up through the usage of language that enforces social concepts that crush a marginalized group, it mystically negates all of that.

All we ask is that people be sensitive and respectful of the perspectives of everyone, just as you would expect them to be of you. If any of you were offended by something, I'm sure you wouldn't hesitate to express it and expect to receive understanding from everyone else,

I appreciate the additional commentary you added to the original first line. But I am going to have to politely and conditionally disagree. Yes, it can be taken as racist and offensive, but I think that also depends on context, like much in the English language. And Invi is right - as we have all seen it is very easy to take something wrong in a format like this forum. And therefore even if you are Asian and saying this, given it is difficult to determine context in this format, the term could be offensive.

However here is where I differ. While it might offend, who says what does determine nowadays whether it is racist or merely offensive to an individual.

I dated a Korean girl for a while - one of those odd situations where you both try to make a great friendship work as a romance and then realize you are really only good friends - and she would use that term - but in two different contexts. The first context was when, well, she was in the mood and I was not picking up on her subtle clues. Me miss subtle clues - go figure, right? But the second context was actually where I saw her first use it - as an insult to guys, in essence calling them horn dog racists. When guys would assume she was some Asian bimbo who would sleep around looking for a Sugar Daddy, she would break contact, and with a sneer say "Me so horny". I almost choked on a beer the first time she did that.

We could also go into the use of the infamous "N" word. About ten years ago key members of the NAACP and other black leaders made a push and appealed to black entertainers to stop using the word. obvously popular culture blew right through that request. And as the defense attorney was told during the Zimmerman, the line of thought that the "N" word is instantly racist is "old school" - it now all depends on context. And from my experience around young people, it seems to be the case. They seem to pretty much reject the racism/offense reality our generation assumes.

"Today, someone said a slur. It actually doesn’t matter what slur it was, because you see, he didn’t intend to hurt anyone and therefore it couldn’t possibly be a slur. Much like how intent magically protects the actions of all privileged viewpoints, intent means that anything you say, no matter how many groups it hurts, what awful views it enables, no matter what systemic bigotries it props up through the usage of language that enforces social concepts that crush a marginalized group, it mystically negates all of that."

I do not completely disagree with this but perhaps it best applies to those considered "privleged" because again an entire younger generation seems to reject the notion that certain terms are now automatically racist or even offensive. Now if they are offended by something you say or do, they will certainly let you know. But that does not preclude them from using terms that we as an older generation are certainly sensitive about.

Again, I am not arguing with the idea we need to be careful with what we write here on the forum as the intent or meaning can easily be misinterpreted and offend. But the idea that certain terms are automatically racist seems to be changing no matter what we think or say.

All we ask is that people be sensitive and respectful of the perspectives of everyone, just as you would expect them to be of you. If any of you were offended by something, I'm sure you wouldn't hesitate to express it and expect to receive understanding from everyone else,

Exactly. Well said as usual.

QG, we can't make assumptions about the younger generation. I am a part of the younger generation, and I will gladly and frequently educate anyone using a racist term in my presence, even if they are using it to refer to themselves. I think "context" falls under the scope of Luna's quote as well. Doesn't matter. Someone was hurt by it. That is what is important here. We learn and move on from it.

QG, you know that I am fond of you, but as the mother of a black child; I will ENTIRELY beg to differ about the N word being situationally racist. There is never a time when it isn't. People that use it may feel like they're taking back their power, but it's still a NASTY word. Just like I may refer to myself as a bitch, but it is one of the first insults that pop into my mind when I don't like a bitch, because it's mean! As far as Asian racism, it does need to stop. Objectifying women with a stereotype that they have magic vaginas isn't flattering, it's demeaning. It also pisses me off when there are women that objectify black men, in much the same manner. It's ridic..

I understand. Like I said - we need to be careful about what we say so as not to offend people. And I hope Maeia or JOC were not offended by her words or mine. Nor you by my comments about popular music.

And not trying to offend - but you would be at the upper edge of the "younger generation" I am thinking of lol. a lot of the younger people I am around are 17 - 22/23. The younger end of the exact population you tend to. In fact, if you remember, I worked with them before they unfortunately had to come to you, so it is more first hand experience. There is a shift happening. I just do not think our "reality" on this issue is theirs.
