She lay beneath the lace

and tassles

velvet and flashes

of sequins and rhinestones

on her fanciful parasol.

She made herself a mystery

residing pale and removed

the sun could not touch her

but she looked out at the shore and watched

the waves, the birds

the people who unwrapped themselves in

wanton worship.

She was an elegant island

among the sand and flesh and sea

and provoked more curiosity

than those who had bared all to see

and the sun tried

to kiss her

but as with everyone else she was

unmoved.
