  1. This is really nice. The almond and raspberry are disappearing as it dries down, but that's okay because the vanilla, amber, and nutmeg are very soft and nice. Spices usually amp up on me but so far this one is playing nice.

  2. I'm a huge Charles Darwin fangurl, so I really love the idea of a perfume named after the place that was the catalyst for his concept of evolution by natural selection. The prickly pear and morning glory were dominant at first, and I liked it. However, after dry down they've diminished, and what is left smells perfumey in the conventional sense and is giving me a little of a headache.

  3. Okay, I just emailed Mara for an invoice, but if there is a way to do this within the cart system, I'd like to know for future reference.

What if the forum credits being redeemed are less than the prices of any of the items being ordered? There is no way to do this, right?

ex: I have $15 worth of forum credits, and I want to order a $50 item and a $25 item.

  4. Okay, so I received this in a trade and randomly chose it to try this morning. I did not read the description or I probably would not have done more than sniff it in the vial. I usually do not go for masculine or unisex scents.

It smells really clean. The vanilla musk is dominant for me, and it reminds me a little of TMI. It is very pleasant. I'd probably like smelling it on a guy better than on me.

  5. This is a very clean, fresh scent on me. The fruit was not overpowering, nor is it cloyingly sweet. I'm thinking it must be the peony that balances it out, because it doesn't scream fruit (not that there's anything wrong with that -- I like fruit), but this is a nice change from some of my super fruity favorites.

  6. I've had a sample of this forever; I"ve smelled in the vial quite a few times but have somehow never actually worn it. This morning I decided to try it.

This smells aldehyde-y, like Chanel #5. It was interesting in the vial, and I also smelled dirty musk. However, after dry down, it really smelled like a designer perfume that older rich ladies would wear, like a cross between Chanel #5 and Estee Lauder Youth Dew. A complex and sophisticated scent, but really not me, because of the rich old lady vibe.

I smell no cinnamon or patchouli. My nose is usually really sensitive to patchouli. Reading Mara's description, and everyone else's reviews, I wonder if I got a damaged or adulterated sample or something)? Aldehydes can form from breakdown of natural oils, so I wonder if mine has been heat damaged or something?

edited to add: Okay, I just read some descriptions of Youth Dew, and I guess my nose is not as crazy as I thought, as this classic fragrance has aldehydes, plus shares several notes in common with Alzbeta, including cinnamon and patchouli. Unfortunately, I am drawing the comparison to Chanel #5 and Youth Dew from memory, as I do not own either one.

  7. Hi Chitown: Welcome here! why don't you tell us a little about what LP products you have, what scents you gravitate towards, and what types of scents you might want to explore. You would probably get some good suggestions.

  8. I have had people tell me that scented sexology smells urinal on me, even though I'm almost certain that's the civet. Shame, too, because I really like that smell.

I'm starting to worry less and less about whether someone might think X or Y stinks, as long as I'm wearing an amount that stays mostly within my personal space. I don't mean if someone found a scent unpleasant I'd force them to smell it all day, but I'm not going to worry about wether a random person that may move in and out of my personal space might get a small whiff of something they consider unpleasant.

Also, off topic, but when I was bush-whacking in upper New York, I fell onto a young white spruce tree. All those broken needles were sticking in my sweater, and for the rest of the day all my flatmates told me I smelled like cat p*ss.

Yes, I've totally gotten cat piss smell from spruce. I know what you are talking about. I also get cat piss sometimes from freshly ground coffee beans (because coffee has the cat piss chemical I mentioned above), but damn, I love coffee.

  9. Now see, minus the floral I'd say that's exactly what Eye of the Storm is.

I never got a chance to try that one; it sounds interesting. But I think the honeysuckle would really change the whole mood of things.

Maybe I'll post my idea on the potion ideas thread...

  10. The cat pissy constituent of cat piss (and bobcat piss, and other kinds of piss) is 3-mercapto-3 methyl-1-butanol, a putative cat pheromone which is also used in the flavor and perfume industry.

On this page it is described as fruity at low doses, meaty and gravy at high doses: http://dir.perfumerflavorist.com/detail/ffmMaterial.html?mid=1237

It occurs naturally in meats, wines, coffee, passionfruits and other things we consume.

I'm trying to look up the chemical constituents of doe piss to see what the likely candidates are for co-ocurance in honey or perfume ingredients, but my library is totally lame and has apparently cut the Journal of Chemical Ecology, which is probably the journal I use the most. Very frustrating!

  11. Hubs and I took a drive last night between thunderstorms. I had the window down and it smelled like fresh rain, ozone, wet earth and honeysuckle. I would love a summer potion like that.

If rebrews of PE's are happening, I'd love to see Tyvey's Mango-ish come back. I've been worrying about my bottle, which is getting low, and has become possibly my new favorite scent.

  12. Hm. =/ I could swear this is Pink Sugar fragrance oil.

I find it similar to Pink Sugar, but much more complex, especially after dry down. I think of it as what Pink Sugar wishes it could be when it grows up. Pink Sugar was the first fragrance I heard about as a copulin cover up (on another forum) and I remember being very disappointed in it when I finally got some and tried it. It smelled flat and superficial. Then later I got some LP Pink and wow! Love and first smell!

And Dolphindolls, I also like LP Pink and LP Black layered. Yum!

  13. Everyone smells things differently, and it can even vary day to day. My husband once thought he smelled cat piss and it turned out to be my Sexology (scented). I didn't wear it for a long time, then I wore it again and he thought it smelled good. I think that Bacchanalia straight from the vial reeks heavily of unneutered tom cat piss, but my husband thought it smelled really good. When it dries down, the urine smell goes away, but I can't get past the wet scent.

Some people are hypersensitive to the smell of androstenone and think it smells unpleasantly like BO or urine. It just smells vaguely, mildly musky to me.
